Satluj CBFC Censorship Timeline: Cuts, Courts, and Delays
A clear timeline of certification demands, title fights, festival cancellations, and why the film skipped a clean theatrical path.
Satluj's censorship history is not a footnote—it is half the public story. Here is a compressed timeline based on reporting that accumulated between 2022 and 2026.
Timeline (simplified)
- 2022–23: Certification stall; CBFC seeks major alterations and title change pressure after Ghallughara.
- 2023: TIFF premiere removed late from the lineup.
- 2023–25: Punjab '95 phase; cut lists expand in media reports; Bombay High Court path discussed; trailer removed from YouTube India after release in one episode of the saga.
- Early 2025: Uncut international release plans announced, then postponed.
- 2025: Trehan interviews describe extreme cut demands and refusal to release a compromised version.
- 3 July 2026: Uncut digital release as Satluj on ZEE5.
- ~5 July 2026: Removed from ZEE5 India until further notice.
- 9 July 2026: PIL in Punjab & Haryana HC seeks restoration.
What the fight was about
Beyond individual dialogues or scenes, the dispute was about who controls historical narrative on screen: filmmakers documenting alleged state excess, or institutions demanding sanitised language. Trehan has described being asked to dilute words and religious texture that the story required.

The escalation: 21 cuts → 127
In 2022 the CBFC cleared the film with 21 cuts. Then officials kept coming back: 30 cuts, 45, 85 — and eventually 127 changes, including removing Khalra's name, references to the Punjab Police, the Indian flag, Gurbani, cremation site names, and even the title itself. Director Honey Trehan, who had agreed to earlier rounds, drew the line and refused further changes.
Courts and cancelled premieres
The producers challenged the CBFC in the Bombay High Court, then withdrew the case for an out-of-court settlement — only to face fresh demands. The film's gala premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival was cancelled, and a planned 2025 overseas release stalled.
The aftermath
When Satluj finally appeared uncut on ZEE5 on July 3, 2026, it was removed in India within 48 hours, and on July 7 the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting formed a high-level committee to review it.
